In the early 1960’s, Amherst, NH was a much smaller town than it is today. As the decade continued, the town’s population began to grow at a rapid rate. With the influx of new residents came new energy and ideas.
In 1970, a talented artist, gardener, and landscaper named Anne Colby Hines invited a group of friends who were interested in gardening to her home to talk about starting a garden club. There was interest in beautifying areas around town, helping the town maintain these areas, and learning more about the latest gardening practices.
The Amherst NH Garden Club was formed in the fall of 1971. The club’s first organizational meeting took place at the Amherst Town Library. About 35 men and women attended. Mrs. Richard (Marjorie) Lions called the meeting to order. Later, she would become the club’s first president.
In 2021 we will celebrate our 50th anniversary!
Awards
In 2009 we received, for the second time since 1981, the NH Arborists Association Community Beautification Award for our work with the town of Amherst. During those tough economic times, the Club worked with our town to plant, care for and maintain, as well as beautify, our local landscape. Many hands work to this end and civic projects are a vital part of our club.
