Tom Mitchell is the owner of Ledge Top Farm in Wilton, where he has been growing chemical-free vegetables and small fruit for 40 years. Formerly a biology teacher at Milford High School, Tom’s knowledge of genetics and plant life provided a good background for success in farming.
Along with running Ledge Top Farm, Tom once farmed the land that is now the Stearns-Davis Community Garden in Amherst. He can still be found there, supporting the community garden with his labor and expertise.
Next door to Ledge Top Farm is another of Tom’s endeavors: Four Seasons Aquaponics, which he and a business partner started in 2015. Aquaponics combines “aquaculture” (raising fish) and “hydroponics” (soil-less gardening). This innovative approach to growing plants and fish together in one integrated system enables Tom to produce fresh leafy greens and herbs year-round in his greenhouse.
Tom’s presentation will cover the history of Ledge Top Farm and Four Seasons Aquaponics, including the organic growing methods he uses. As a member of Certified Naturally Grown, he is committed to organic farming.
After the presentation, we’ll raffle off a Ledge Top Farm CSA membership valued at $100. The winner will enjoy fresh, seasonal vegetables from Ledge Top Farm in 2018. There may also be produce from the aquaponics greenhouse for sale at the meeting, depending on what Tom has available at the time.
