It was dreary outside but colorful inside at the Souhegan Sustainability Fair which took place on Sat., May 4. Christy Belvin, Joan O’Brien, Mary Salmon, Nancy Hokinson, Becky Stoughton, and Nancy Head set up an Amherst Garden Club booth featuring rain gardens, complete with live video!

The fair is an annual event dedicated to promoting socially and environmentally responsible living. There were booths to visit, workshops to attend, new things to learn, and lots of interesting people to talk to.  It was a good day!

The garden club thanks Lisa Loosigian, the SOAK NH Program Coordinator, for providing brochures and other materials.

Jane Martin Civic Gardens Walk

On a perfect June morning, club members took a casual stroll through the village to visit five of our civic gardens. M.J. Bachman and Barbara Williams organized the walk, with Joan O’Brien accompanying.

At the Brick School garden we ran into Sally Hooper pruning the rose bushes, with her dog “Rico,” rescued from Puerto Rico, looking on.

The tour ended with lemonade and cookies in the Library back garden. Special thanks to Marti Warren and Meg Clemens for being on hand to talk about the Library gardens.

Also thanks to Sue Batchelder for the sunflower seedlings, which we each took to plant in honor of Jane. If you’d like to plant a sunflower for Jane, contact Sue — she may have extras.

A Sunflower for Jane

Jane was a person who comes into your life only
because of chance and being at the right place at
the right time.

When I look at a sunflower and
see the details; the stem, the petals
and seeds, these remind me of
Jane and describe her perfectly.

The stem: tall, graceful and
steady. Jane is always cheerful
and warm, since the day we met
I will always see her beautiful smile.

The Petals: the multitude of petals reflect the
many people who lives she touched. The
uncountable number of friends that surrounded
her. Jane loved wearing the color yellow.

The seeds: the mass number of seeds in one
flower, propagate and feed birds and other
wildlife and humans too! Jane’s charisma was
huge, real and always caring. She embraced
friendship and taught how to be a friend.

The round flower head with the huge smile will
forever say “Hey Jane, this sunflower is for you!”

Amherst Garden Club at Souhegan Sustainability Fair

On April 14 — Earth Day — the Amherst Garden Club participated in the Souhegan Sustainability Fair, an event dedicated to promoting socially and environmentally responsible living.

Organizer Nancy Head did a great job setting up our booth and recruiting helpers. Our theme was invasive plants, and thanks to Anne Krantz there was an in-depth display — including descriptive posters, handouts, and even sample plants.

Club members Nancy Hokinson, Becky Stoughton, Anne Krantz, Joan O’Brien, and Nancy Head interacted with the visitors, answered questions, and generally spread the goodwill of the club to the surrounding community.

With a variety of exhibits, demonstrations, vendors, food, live music, presentations, and hands-on workshops, the fair itself was a big success.

Special thanks to Sally Hooper for letting the team both assemble and store the float overnight in her garage.

Nancy Head did a wonderful job pulling together displays to both showcase our club and promote “waterwise gardening.” She had help from Diane Merrithew, Joan Poltack, June Bridgewater, Marti Warren, Christy Belvin, and Joan O’Brien.

Holiday Décor Workshop 2016 Photos

The Amherst Garden Club kicked off the holiday season with their annual wreath-decorating and holiday-décor workshop on December 1, 2016. Club members decorated wreaths, created centerpieces, and assembled all sorts of festive creations using fresh greenery, berries, pine cones, ribbons, and more.

After the workshop, members enjoyed a wonderful spread of homemade soups, breads, and desserts.

Many thanks to VP Marie Nickerson for coordinating this club tradition, the Congregational Church for the use of their facilities, and Marti Warren for taking and sharing her photos (see embedded Facebook post below).
