A Review of Bedrock Gardens in Lee, NH

[Webmaster’s note: AGC member Paula Domanski recently visited Bedrock Gardens in Lee, NH, with husband Neil and submitted the pictures below as well as this write-up of her thoughts.]

Bedrock represents gardening on a grand scale; covering 20 acres, it’s more like a park than a typical private garden. Chock full of trees, shrubs, perennials, water features and larger than life garden art, it had me scratching my head in wonder at the time and effort it took to envision and create this space and the objects in it.  During our visit, unusual peonies, epimedium, and arisaema were in bloom alongside traditional garden favorites like corydalis, brunnera, phlox and forget-me-nots.  Arboreal delights included unusual conifers, Japanese maples, paperbark maples and what was said to be the second largest shagbark hickory in NH, a massive tree covered with long chunks of shaggy, grayish green bark.  Neil and I walked the garden path in an hour and a half but you could easily spend more time sitting and enjoying some of the pleasing vistas.
